SIM cards, roaming, and how to stay connected as a UK traveller

Most modern UK phones work well in the United States. The key checks are whether your handset is unlocked and whether it supports the main American frequency bands used by 4G and 5G networks. With the right setup you can choose between UK roaming, a local SIM or eSIM, or reliable Wi Fi in hotels and cafes.

If you are travelling under the Visa Waiver Programme, make sure your ESTA is approved before you fly. You can also reach the team via Contact or start from Home

Can UK phones work in the USA

Most recent iPhone and Android models support US 4G and 5G bands. Unlocked devices can use a US SIM or eSIM without issues.

Traveller tip: Before my first trip to Orlando I almost bought a new phone. A quick settings check showed my handset already supported US bands so I saved the money.

How to check?

Open Settings and look for About Phone or Mobile Data options to confirm supported bands. If your handset supports LTE or NR bands 2, 4, 5, 12 and 17 it will work on most US networks such as AT and T, T Mobile, and Verizon

Do I need to unlock my phone?

Yes. Your phone must be unlocked to use a US SIM or eSIM. Contact your UK network to confirm. Unlocking usually completes within forty eight hours.

What about iPhone or Android?

All recent iPhone and Samsung Galaxy models work in the USA. Very old 3G only devices may struggle. If you want 5G confirm your model supports 5G bands used by your chosen network.

Using UK mobile networks abroad

Roaming policies can change so check your provider before departure. See official pages for EE, Vodafone, O2, and Three

Typical daily roaming charges:

  • EE around seven pounds per day with data from your allowance.
  • Vodafone Roam Further about six pounds per day on many plans.
  • O2 Travel Inclusive Zone on selected contracts or about four pounds ninety nine per day.
  • Three around two pounds per day on newer plans while some legacy plans include roaming.

Traveller insight: I used Vodafone Roam Further in New York and it worked smoothly. Data burned faster than expected so I leaned on hotel Wi Fi whenever I could.

Avoiding charges:

  • Turn off data roaming until you are ready to connect.
  • Use Wi Fi whenever possible.
  • If you receive unexpected texts about roaming rates pause usage and confirm costs first.

Buying a SIM card or eSIM in the USA

If you want a local number or cheaper data a US SIM card can be ideal.

Buying before you travel

You can buy an eSIM from Airalo, Holafly, or Nomad. Activation is instant via QR code.

From my own trips: I bought an Airalo eSIM before flying to JFK and it connected the moment I turned off airplane mode which saved a queue at the airport kiosk.

Buying in the USA

Prepaid SIMs are sold at 7 Eleven, Target, Best Buy, and airports. Networks include AT and T, T Mobile, and Verizon. Expect to pay thirty to fifty US dollars for five to ten gigabytes of data.

SIM or eSIM

Physical SIMs are useful if you want a new number. eSIMs let you keep your UK SIM active for WhatsApp or banking codes. If your phone supports dual SIM you can run both for flexibility.

Mobile data and coverage in the USA

Coverage is excellent in cities and along major highways. Remote areas can be patchy.

  • Best coverage is often on Verizon or T Mobile.
  • Typical speeds are around thirty to fifty megabits per second on 4G and one hundred fifty to three hundred megabits per second on 5G.
  • For a two week trip many travellers use five to ten gigabytes if they rely on Wi Fi often.

Use data saver mode to stretch allowances. Download offline areas in Google Maps or Waze so navigation keeps working without data.

Wi Fi and portable internet

Free Wi Fi

Hotels cafes libraries and airports offer free Wi Fi widely. Chains such as Starbucks and McDonald’s are reliable for a quick connection.

Wi Fi calling

Most UK networks support Wi Fi calling. This lets you call or text over Wi Fi with no roaming charge and works nicely with WhatsApp FaceTime and iMessage.

Portable Wi Fi devices

MiFi units create a private hotspot for multiple devices. Rental typically costs about six pounds per day. Book in advance and collect at major airports.

Staying safe online

Public Wi Fi can be risky. Avoid banking apps and consider a VPN. Do not save passwords on shared networks. See Ofcom guidance on using mobiles abroad

Calls texts and apps

Dialling the UK from the USA

Dial plus forty four and remove the leading zero from the UK number. For example 07123 456789 becomes plus forty four 7123 456789.

Receiving calls

You can receive calls on your UK SIM but roaming fees may apply. Use WhatsApp or FaceTime Audio to avoid charges.

Free apps for communication:

  • WhatsApp for free voice and video calls over Wi Fi or data.
  • FaceTime for Apple to Apple calls.
  • Skype or Zoom for longer calls to landlines.
  • Google Voice for low cost calls to UK numbers from the USA.

Personal tip: I often call taxis through WhatsApp using hotel Wi Fi which avoids roaming charges completely.

Tips for saving money on phone and data

  • Keep roaming off until you are ready to connect.
  • Use airplane mode with Wi Fi enabled where available.
  • Rely on messaging apps instead of texts or voice minutes.
  • Download offline music and maps before you fly.
  • Compare SIM and roaming plans before departure.
  • Monitor data usage daily in your phone settings.

Step by step checklist

  1. Check if your phone is unlocked and supports US networks.
  2. Compare roaming packages against local SIM or eSIM plans.
  3. Turn off roaming until you choose your option.
  4. Enable Wi Fi calling and download offline maps.
  5. Use WhatsApp or iMessage to contact home over Wi Fi.
  6. Track data usage to avoid extra charges.
