Accommodation and Staying Safe in the USA

Hotels, motels, Airbnbs, and safety tips for UK travellers

I remember a late arrival into Phoenix when the front desk placed a larger hold than I expected and my UK debit card took days to release. Since then I always carry a credit card for incidentals, book well reviewed properties, and take two minutes to check the locks and the smoke alarm as soon as I open the door.

If you are travelling under the Visa Waiver Programme, make sure your ESTA is approved before you book. You can also reach the team via Contact or start from the Home page.

1. Types of accommodation in the USA

The USA offers luxury hotels, extended stay suites, roadside motels, hostels, and private rentals. Hotels usually have interior corridors, a staffed reception, and amenities such as a restaurant or gym. Motels often have exterior doors and suit drivers breaking up a long journey. Vacation rentals like Airbnb give you more space and a kitchen which is helpful for families or longer stays.

Hotel versus motel

Hotels are larger, offer more facilities, and are common in cities. Motels tend to be smaller and near highways, and can cost less. Both can be safe when you choose properties with strong recent reviews and good lighting in car parks and corridors.

Is Airbnb safe in the USA

Yes when you use the platform correctly. Book and pay inside Airbnb and avoid any request to move the chat or payment off the app. Verified hosts and recent reviews are key signals.

2. Booking hotels and Airbnbs

You can book direct with a hotel brand, via comparison sites such as Booking dot com or Expedia, or through Airbnb. Booking direct may include loyalty points or flexible cancellation. Third party deals can be cheaper but often require full prepayment.

Minimum age and ID requirements:

  • Many hotels require the lead guest to be at least twenty one years old.
  • Some budget properties accept eighteen plus guests. Confirm before booking.
  • You must show a passport and a payment card in your name at check in.

Can you book without a credit card

Not usually. Hotels almost always ask for a credit card at check in to secure a deposit for incidentals. You can usually settle the final bill by debit card or cash but a card is needed for the hold.

3. Check in, ID and deposits

Documents you will need:

  • Passport or government ID
  • Credit card for the deposit
  • Booking confirmation on your phone or printed

How much is a hotel deposit

Many hotels place a temporary hold of one hundred to three hundred US dollars per stay. The hold is released a few days after checkout if there are no charges.

Debit cards and cash

Debit cards work but holds can take longer to release. Cash is rarely accepted for deposits although some motels allow it.

Is it safe to book with a credit card

Yes when you use official booking channels. Avoid sending card details by email. For rentals keep all payments inside Airbnb to stay covered by their policies.

4. Safety for UK tourists

The United States is generally safe for visitors, but awareness is important. Choose areas with good lighting and transport links, and pick properties with helpful security features such as a staffed lobby or gated access.

Emergencies:

  • The emergency number across the United States is 911.
  • Save your insurer emergency number and note the nearest urgent care centre.
  • If your passport is lost, contact the British Embassy in Washington DC or your nearest British Consulate.

Safer floors and rooms

Many travellers prefer floors three to six which feel secure from street access yet remain manageable in an emergency. Ask for a room away from ground floor exterior doors if it helps you feel comfortable.

5. Tipping hotel staff and etiquette

Staff role Typical tip
Housekeeping Two to five US dollars per night, left daily
Bellhop or porter One to two US dollars per bag
Concierge service Five to ten US dollars for special assistance
Valet parking Two to five US dollars when the car is returned

Cash tips are still preferred. It is not mandatory but it is part of American culture and shows appreciation for good service.

6. Cleanliness and comfort checks

When you enter your room, check the lock, latch, and smoke alarm. Scan bedding and the bathroom for cleanliness. Place luggage on the rack and check mattress seams and the headboard for small brown spots or moving specks which can indicate bed bugs. Keep bags off the bed or carpet if possible.

Continental breakfast explained

A continental breakfast usually includes coffee, juice, pastries, cereal, and fruit. Hot items may be listed separately on your booking.

7. Airbnb safety and scam avoidance

  • Book and pay only on Airbnb.
  • Read host reviews carefully and look for Verified ID.
  • Avoid listings that ask for external communication or payment.
  • Check cancellation policies. Strict policies offer limited refunds.

If a host cancels last minute

You will receive a refund and Airbnb often assists with rebooking. Frequent host cancellations can lead to penalties for the host.

8. Step by step safety checklist

  • Compare prices across reliable sites and read recent reviews
  • Check minimum age, ID, and deposit rules before you book
  • Bring a credit card for the incidentals hold
  • Choose properties with twenty four hour reception or strong security reviews
  • Store passports and valuables in the room safe
  • Save emergency numbers, nine one one and your insurer helpline
  • Keep all Airbnb conversations and payments on the platform
