Shopping, Sales Tax and Duty Free in the USA – A Practical Guide for UK Travellers
I learned a few money saving tricks the hard way. The first time I bought trainers in New York I forgot about sales tax at the till and paid more than the sticker price. Now I always check the local rate, pay in US dollars on my card, and keep receipts for warranties or any tax reclaim options.
If you are travelling under the Visa Waiver Programme, make sure your ESTA is approved before you shop. You can also reach the team via Contact or start from the Home page.
1. Understanding US sales tax
In the United States the price tag often excludes sales tax. The tax is added at the till and varies by state and sometimes by city. There is no national VAT. Five states do not have a statewide sales tax. These are Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon. Some local areas in Alaska still add a local tax.
| ITEM | BASE PRICE | TYPICAL SALES PRICE | TOTAL PAID |
|---|---|---|---|
| T shirt | 25 US dollars | 2.00 US dollars | 27.00 US dollars |
| Trainers | 100 US dollars | 8.00 US dollars | 108.00 US dollars |
| Restaurant meal | 20 US dollars | 1.60 US dollars | 21.60 US dollars |
Clothing and groceries may be exempt or lower rated in some places. New York State exempts clothing and footwear that cost under 110 US dollars per item, and New York City also applies this exemption. Always check local rules because some counties opt in and out.
Traveller tip: To estimate the total price multiply the sticker by one plus the local rate. For example 100 US dollars times 1.088 in New York City gives about 108.80 US dollars.
2. Smart shopping tips for UK travellers
Outlet malls and discounts
Outlet centres such as Premium Outlets and Tanger Outlets often have large reductions. Weekdays are calmer and staff have more time to help with sizing.
Electronics and warranties
Electronics can be good value. Check voltage at 110 volts and plug type before buying. Confirm whether the manufacturer warranty is valid in the UK or if you need an international warranty.
Cards and payments
Most UK Visa, Mastercard and Amex cards work well. Avoid dynamic currency conversion which charges you in pounds. Choose to pay in US dollars for a fairer rate. If your card adds foreign fees, consider a travel friendly card such as Monzo Plus, Starling, or Revolut.
Returns and clothing sizes
US sizes run differently. For women a UK 12 is often close to a US 8. For men a UK 42 jacket equals a US 42 but the cut can be looser. Keep receipts and tags because thirty day returns are common.
3. Duty free rules when entering the USA
Visitors may bring personal items for their trip with limits on some goods. As a rule of thumb adults aged twenty one or over may bring one litre of alcohol duty free. Non residents can usually bring up to 100 US dollars of gifts duty free. Always declare food, plant material, and anything you are unsure about.
| ITEM | TYPICAL ALLOWANCE FOR VISITOR |
|---|---|
| Alcohol | One litre for adults aged twenty one or over |
| Cigarettes | Check local limits and duties if over small personal amounts |
| Gifts and souvenirs | Up to 100 US dollars total value may be exempt |
| Food | Sealed and declared if animal based. Avoid meat, fresh fruit, or plants |
If you accidentally packed something restricted, declare it honestly. Officers may seize and dispose of the item, but truthful declarations help you avoid penalties.
4. Duty free allowances when returning to the UK
When you fly home to Great Britain you can bring other goods up to 390 pounds tax free. Alcohol and tobacco have their own limits. If you exceed the allowance you must declare the full amount.
| CATEGORY | ALLOWANCE WHEN ARRIVING IN GREAT BRITAIN |
|---|---|
| Alcohol | Four litres of still wine plus one litre of spirits over twenty two per cent, or two litres of fortified wine or other drinks up to twenty two per cent. You can also bring sixteen litres of beer. |
| Tobacco | Two hundred cigarettes or one hundred cigarillos or fifty cigars or two hundred fifty grams of tobacco. |
| Other goods | Up to three hundred ninety pounds in value. Private plane or boat travel may reduce this to two hundred seventy pounds. |
Tip: Allowances are per person and cannot be pooled between travellers. Keep receipts in case officers ask for values.
5. Can tourists get a tax refund in the USA
There is no national VAT refund scheme for visitors. Texas allows international shoppers to apply for sales tax refunds on eligible purchases from participating stores when goods are exported. Refund agents operate counters in cities and some airports. Requirements include original itemised receipts and showing the goods before departure.
Louisiana’s Tax Free Shopping programme for international visitors ended on one July two thousand twenty four and refund centres have closed.
6. Coupons, discounts and sale seasons
Coupon culture
Apps and sites such as RetailMeNot, Honey, and Rakuten can help you stack savings. Local deal platforms like Groupon can be handy for attractions and restaurants.
Sale events
Black Friday and Cyber Monday bring large reductions across fashion, tech, and travel. Some states also run short tax holiday weekends for school supplies and clothing. For example, Texas runs a back to school tax free weekend each August for clothing and supplies under one hundred US dollars.
Traveller note: I sign up for store newsletters a week before I fly. The instant ten to fifteen per cent welcome code often works on first purchases.
